Gather the Necessary Tools

Before attempting to jump start your car, make sure you have the necessary tools. You will need a set of jumper cables and a working vehicle to provide the jump. If you don't have these tools, you can call a jump start car service near you for assistance.

Position the Vehicles

Park the working vehicle close enough to the dead vehicle so that the jumper cables can reach both batteries. Make sure both vehicles are turned off and in park or neutral with the parking brake on.

Connect the Jumper Cables

First, connect the positive (+) cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery. Then, connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal on the working battery. Next, connect the negative (-) cable to the negative terminal on the working battery. Finally, connect the other end of the negative cable to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car, such as a bolt or bracket.

Start the Working Vehicle

Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the dead battery to charge.

Start the Dead Vehicle

After a few minutes, try starting the dead vehicle. If it doesn't start, let the working vehicle run for a few more minutes before trying again.

Disconnect the Jumper Cables

Once the dead vehicle is running, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were connected. Start with the negative cable on the dead car, then the negative cable on the working car, followed by the positive cable on the working car, and finally the positive cable on the dead car.

Drive the Vehicle

After successfully jump starting your car, it's important to drive it for at least 20 minutes to allow the battery to fully recharge. This will prevent the battery from dying again in the near future.

Call a Professional

If you are unable to jump start your car or if it dies again shortly after jump starting, it may be a sign of a larger issue with your battery or alternator.
